Every year, over 2 million individuals worldwide die as a result of work-related accidents and diseases, equating to over 6,000 deaths every day (International Labour Organisation, 2020). Every year, there are approximately 340 million occupational accidents and 160 million victims of work-related injuries and illnesses worldwide (International Labour Organisation, 2020). Occupational health and safety (OHS) is a key issue for many businesses.
Organizations, regardless of size or nature, must safeguard their employees and create a safe and healthy working environment. They must detect potential health and safety hazards in the workplace and take appropriate measures to keep their employees safe. Occupational safety is concerned with potential safety dangers that may result in injury. Occupational health, on the other hand, examines prospective health issues such occupational medicine, occupational hygiene, and primary health care, as well as worker well-being.
Organizations must manage several areas of their operations that necessitate compliance with various sets of standards such as quality, health and safety, and the environment. As ISO standards become more widely acknowledged, well-established organizations tend to apply many management-system standards at the same time, such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001.
Taking this into account, ISO chose to create its standards using a framework known as Annex SL (renamed Annex L in the 2019 edition), which consists of ten category clauses to aid in the integration of different management systems. In 2015, new versions of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 that adhere to the new structure were released. OHSAS 18001, however, has been superseded by ISO 45001, which was issued in 2018. ISO 45001 is an internationally recognized framework for managing workplace health and safety that conforms to ISO Annex L and follows the same high-level structure as other international standards.
Organizations that intend to establish an OHS management system (OHSMS) based on the ISO 45001:2018 standard but are unfamiliar with its structure and definitions frequently require significant resources to grasp the standard's requirements and plan its implementation. This course provides help for developing an OHSMS in accordance with ISO 45001:2018 criteria. It seeks to describe all of the ISO 45001:2018 criteria clause by clause in order to provide guidance to:
• Organizations prepared to adopt ISO 45001:2018
• Individuals seeking a career in occupational health and safety
• Internal and external auditors who conduct OHSMS audits
In addition to the standard's requirements, this book contains industry best practices, methods, and approaches for meeting these standards. While clarifying each standard requirement, it also discusses the processes required to meet the requirement, places that auditors may check, and necessary or voluntary documents that may be maintained or retained to verify compliance with the requirement.
However, the reader should keep in mind that the methodologies described in this book are not the only ones that can be used to solve ISO 45001. OHS is a broad field with a lot of research being published all the time. Interested parties should therefore examine and research other strategies in order to find the best approaches for their organization.
